CHAPTER TEN

Sara had been booked into the Sherry Netherland, one of New York's most expensive and exclusive hotels. She would not have thought a single appearance in the Eddie Benfield Show warranted such extravagance, but she knew better than to comment on it and looked around wide-eyed as she was wafted up to the fifteenth floor and followed Mike Marsh along a thickly carpeted corridor to her suite.

Large basket of flowers stood on a sideboard, beside it a decanter and glasses.

"The flowers are from Eddie Benfield," he grinned, "and the booze is from me!"

She smiled. "I've heard a great deal about American hospitality but I always thought it was a little exaggerated— until now!"

"You'd be surprised how hospitable we can be when we get the chance, he laughed, and walking over to the window drew the curtains to let in the sunshine. "Let me know if there's anything you need. I've written my number on the telephone pad by the phone."

"You've thought of everything, haven't you?"

"It's my business." He looked at her curiously. "I didn't realize you were flying over with P.J."

"I didn't know it myself." She stifled a yawn and the American looked at her contritely.

"Gee, here am I keeping you talking when I guess all you want is a hot bath and a rest."

"I am a bit tired,"she said,"and I'll be more tired by this evening."

"You sure will," he agreed. "It's way past tea time for you, but it's only noon here! You've a full afternoon and evening ahead of you, so I suggest you take it easy now.''

"What's planned for me? " she asked.

Mike began to enumerate. "You can't meet Eddie till midweek, so I've fixed for you to see him Wednesday. You'll see his manager though. Eddie relies on his manager. He's the one who does most of the day-to-day chores on the show. You'll see him today and also the producer. He's the one to watch out for! A bad-tempered guy with an ulcer, but a genius at is job. He'll check over your songs with you and make most of the arrangements for your appearance. Then this evening the sponsors of the show want to meet you."

Sara made a face. "It's quite different at home," she explained. "An advertiser can only buy a minute or two of time and has no say whatever over the program."

"That sounds like Paradise to me,"Mike grinned. "Here the advertiser can kick out anybody and anything he doesn't like!"

He walked over to the door, his loosely cut jacket making him appear more broad shouldered than seemed possible for his height.

"I suggest you rest now, take a sleeping pill if you've got one, and then have meal service bring you something to eat around three. I'll call for you at three-thirty." He was outside the door when he put his head around it again. "By the way I forgot to ask—you do have a sleeping pill, don't you?"

Sara shook her head and was amused when he brought out a pill box of his own, shook some green capsules into his palm and handed them to her.
